The Charleston City Paper announced that Feed the Need, a coalition of local food and beverage community who have banded together to feed the hungry in town, has served 14,000 meals since the group formed six month ago!

Mickey Baskt, General Manager of Charleston Grill, formed the group in hopes of feeding those in need and easing the pressure on Lowcountry food banks. And save money they did–the local food banks have saved $42,000 since the program began (which breaks down to about $1,500 saved each week). Mickey said he got the idea after Crisis Ministries had to close their soup kitchen down once a week.

This is how it works:

Each week, one of the now 58 participating restaurants, chefs, caterers and hotels will donate the food and labor for 400 free meals. The meals are served at four locations (Tricounty Family Ministries, East Cooper Meals on Wheels, Crisis Ministries and Neighborhood House) which are on a rotating schedule.
